‘PENDLE – WITCH COUNTRY by Alastair Lee’   – book launch and photography exhibition.

A stunning new book from Pendle based multi-award winning photographer and filmmaker Alastair Lee is due for release in Nov 2018.

After the success of Alastair’s previous publications, ‘Forgotten Landscape’ (2006) and ‘Pendle, Home and History’ (2009) comes his third and most spectacular offering to date: ‘Pendle Witch Country’. The new book embraces the area’s most cherished landmark and captures the spirit not only of its infamous past but of a thriving community that lives under its dominant presence. Celebrating the unique charm of Pendle Hill in all of its guises, the book shows off an area that evokes so much pride and many personal connections with a brand new collection of stunning images, capturing how people live and interact with the landscape of which they are so passionate. Flora, fauna, farming and the fabled spirit of witchcraft all permeate through the pages of this illuminating book.

The artists involved in our next exhibition are Up North [ formerly Lancashire Print Makers ] Print Makers.

They were formed in 2014 by a small enthusiastic group of established and emerging artists based in & around Lancashire, in order to create a supportive print makers network, to exhibit work and participate in printmaking events as a collective.

The artists produce quality original prints reflecting personal insights and shared aesthetics.

Included in The Up North Print-makers repertoire are monotypes, monoprints, intaglio prints of all varieties and relief prints which include linocuts and woodblocks.

Higherford Creates Exhibition

So in July we had a fabulous day in Higherford with a number of artists coming together to draw ‘en plein air’ in and around the village.

All the works have now been delivered back to create the fabulous exhibtion Higherford Creates down at the mill.

Now open 11am – 3pm daily from 30th July to 10th August. All work is for sale and visitors can vote for their favourite artist to ‘win’ and exhibition here at the mill next year.

The most popular image was the Packhorse Bridge spanning Pendle Water from Rockville to Darleydale Road just passed the mill.

Higherford Old Bridge, or Packhorse Bridge, is also sometimes called “Th’Owd Brig” or “Roman Bridge”, though it is certainly not of Roman date. It was built in the late 16th or early 17th century for use by packhorse trains carrying coal from near Girburn, Yorkshire.
It was also used by “Lime Girls from Lothersdale bringing lime into the district” — ‘Girls’ is a corruption of ‘gals, itself an abbreviation of ‘Galloways’, a breed of horse particularly suited to packhorse work due to their stamina but now extinct in Britain. Methodist John Wesley preached from this bridge in 1774, but the crowd was hostile and he took refuge in what is now the White Bear Inn.
Higherford Old Bridge crosses Pendle Water about 90m upstream from the bridge carrying the A682 Barrowford to Gisburn road. The old structure is a narrow masonry bridge with a single segmental arch spanning more than 12m. It has two rings of voussoir stones, both chamfered and the lower recessed.
The 300mm wide parapet walls are 1m high at the crown of the arch, where the deck is only 2.6m wide. The coping stones of the parapet walls are secured to each other with iron staples. The parapets are widely splayed on both sides of the western end of the bridge. The north east parapet continues as an approach wall. The southern parapet wall has an iron handrail on its inside, with a flight of 26 steps up the south western side of the deck, the remainder of which is cobbled.
According to a local resident, the cobbled deck surface was laid in around 1985 and is not original. The iron handrail was fitted at the same time. The steep deck surface is very slippery and awkward to use in winter.

Open Studios 7th-8th July
